Old San Juan sits about fifteen minutes west of the villa, and it rewards a slow morning far more than a rushed day. The old city is only seven blocks square, which means you can see the best of it on foot and still be back in Condado for an afternoon swim. Here is the route we give guests.
Start high, at the forts
Begin at Castillo San Felipe del Morro, on the headland at the far tip of the peninsula. Six levels of sandstone step down toward the Atlantic, and the walk out across the great lawn is worth the trip on its own. One ticket covers Castillo San Cristobal as well and stays valid for twenty-four hours, so you can split them across two mornings if you would rather not rush.
Walk down through the blue streets
From El Morro, drop down Calle Norzagaray and let the grid take you. The famous blue cobblestones are adoquines, cast from furnace slag and laid more than a century ago. Calle Fortaleza and Calle San Sebastian are the two you will recognize from photographs, and the umbrella-covered stretch of Fortaleza is worth the five minutes it takes to find.
Stop for coffee, then keep going
Puerto Rican coffee is excellent and taken seriously here. Pause somewhere on Calle San Francisco, then continue to Plaza de Armas, La Fortaleza and the small, quiet Paseo de la Princesa along the outside of the city wall. If you only have time for one more thing, make it the Paseo at the end of the day, when the light comes off the water and the raspao carts come out.
When to go, and how
Aim to arrive before ten. The old city is cooler, quieter and far easier to photograph before the cruise passengers disembark, and parking near the piers is realistic at that hour. Wear proper shoes. The cobbles are uneven and the hills are steeper than they look. By early afternoon you will have seen the best of it and be ready for the beach.
Michael can tell you which days the cruise ships are in, which makes more difference to your morning than anything else. For more of what is close by, browse our San Juan experiences.
