Condado Beach is half a block from the front door, so most days you will not need to go far. But Puerto Rico is a small island with an unusual amount packed into it, and three of the best things here are all comfortable day trips from San Juan.
El Yunque National Forest
Less than an hour east, and the only tropical rainforest in the United States forest system. You leave the coast road, climb into cloud, and the air turns cool and green. La Coca Falls drops right beside the road, the Yokahu tower gives you the canopy stretching to the sea, and the short trail to Juan Diego Falls ends at a cold, clear pool. Reserve entry online in advance, as vehicle access is timed. Go early for the clearest weather.
Laguna Grande and the bioluminescent bay
An hour east in Fajardo, and the strangest, best thing on the island. Kayak through a mangrove channel after dark and the water lights up around your paddle, a cold blue glow from millions of single-celled organisms. Book a tour on a night close to the new moon, when there is least moonlight competing with it, and accept that you will not get a usable photograph. You will remember it anyway.
Culebra and Flamenco Beach
The one worth the early start. A ferry from Ceiba or a short flight from Isla Grande gets you to Culebra, where Flamenco Beach is regularly ranked among the best in the world. White sand, water the color of a swimming pool, and a rusting military tank half-buried in the beach as a reminder of what the island used to be. Book the ferry well ahead in high season, or fly and skip the queue.
Closer to home
If you would rather not spend a day driving, the Condado Lagoon is a short walk from the villa and rents paddleboards and kayaks by the hour. It is sheltered, calm and a good first outing for anyone nervous on the water.
