San Juan is warm all year. The average high barely moves, sitting between 83 and 89°F whatever month you pick, and the sea stays swimmable in January. What actually changes is rainfall, crowds and price, and those three things are what should decide your dates.
December to April: the reliable season
This is the island at its most comfortable. Lower humidity, steady trade winds, the least rain of the year and long stretches of clear weather. It is also when everyone else comes, so expect higher rates and busier beaches, particularly between Christmas and mid-January and again over Easter. If you want guaranteed sunshine and do not mind sharing, book here, and book early.
May to June: the quiet sweet spot
Our favorite window. The winter crowds have gone, rates soften, the sea is warm and the rain that does arrive tends to come as a short afternoon shower rather than a washout. If your dates are flexible and you want the best value without gambling on weather, this is where we would point you.
July to November: hurricane season, honestly
The official season runs from June through November, with genuine risk concentrated in August, September and October. Most days in those months are perfectly fine, and prices are the lowest of the year. But storms do happen, and the sensible approach is to travel with proper insurance and flexible flights rather than to pretend the risk is not there. September is the month we would most encourage you to think twice about.
Worth planning around
- Mid-January — the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian, the biggest street festival of the year in Old San Juan.
- February or March — Carnival in Ponce, a couple of hours away and worth the drive.
- Late December — the Puerto Rican Christmas season runs long and loud, and the city is at its most festive.
