Most winter escapes involve a trade. You either accept a long flight and a time difference, or you deal with customs, currency and a phone plan that stops working the moment you land. San Juan is the rare destination where you get the Caribbean without any of that.
No passport, no customs, no currency
Puerto Rico is a United States territory, so travelers flying from the mainland need no passport and clear no customs on arrival. The currency is the dollar. Your phone works on your normal plan. Your bank card works without a foreign transaction fee. You step off the plane and you are simply somewhere warm.
Four hours from the east coast
Direct flights reach San Juan in about three and a half hours from Miami, four from New York and just over four from Chicago. Leave in the morning, and you can be on Condado Beach the same afternoon. There is no jet lag to recover from, which makes a long weekend genuinely worth taking rather than something you spend two days adjusting to.

While the mainland sits in the dark, San Juan runs at around 83 to 85°F through the winter with sea temperatures in the high seventies. December through April is also the driest, clearest part of the year here, with steady trade winds keeping the evenings comfortable. It is the most reliable weather the island gets.
A whole house, not a hotel room
The other thing that makes a winter trip work is space. City Beach Villa has five bedrooms and four bathrooms, a rooftop deck and an outdoor dining area, half a block from the sand. That means a family or a group of friends can travel together without anyone living out of a suitcase in a shared room, and without paying resort prices for the privilege.
