This is the big one. Major platforms typically add a service fee to the guest on top of the nightly rate, and it scales with the size of the booking. The fee the host pays, which you also pay
There is usually a second commission charged to the host as well. That cost does not vanish. It is priced into the nightly rate you were quoted. Booking direct removes both sides of that equation, which is why direct rates are genuinely better rather than a marketing line.
Currency and card handling
If a platform bills you in a different currency, or converts at its own rate, there is often a spread built into that conversion. For guests traveling within the United States to Puerto Rico this is usually avoidable entirely, since it is all dollars, but it catches people booking from abroad.
The cost that is not money
The one that matters most is harder to price. When something needs sorting out, a platform gives you a help centre. Your flight is delayed and you need a later check-in. Someone in your group has a mobility issue and you need to know about steps. You want a crib. On a platform, that is a message into a queue.
